Major Steven Gerrard to Rangers update as ‘Ibrox club’s stance on former manager’s stunning return emerges’

STEVEN GERRARD is the favourite to replace Russell Martin as Rangers manager.

And the Ibrox club’s stance on reappointing their title-winning former boss has become a little clearer this evening, according to a report.

Rangers are once again on the hunt for a new boss after dismissing Martin on Sunday.

The axe fell on the 39-year old just hours after a dismal 1-1 draw with Falkirk.

Martin departed the Gers having won just one of his seven league matches in charge, with a record of only five wins in 17 games across all competitions.

Attention quickly turned to who could replace him.

Liverpool and England legend Gerrard, 45, was quickly installed as one of the early favourites and is now ODDS-ON to make a stunning return as Rangers manager.

He’s been out of work since leaving Saudi club Al-Ettifaq at the beginning of the year and it’s now almost four years since he left Ibrox to take the Aston Villa job.

Gerrard himself has broken his silence on a potential return to the dugout and says he has “unfinished business” as far as management goes.

He was in the running to be Gers boss once again in the summer but withdrew from consideration, with family reasons reportedly at the heart of that decision.

Appearing on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Gerrard appeared to suggest as much as he opened up on his desire to return to football.

He said: “I haven’t been ready because I haven’t got that team set around me. And the timing hasn’t been right.

Inside the aftermath of Russell Martin’s sacking as Rangers fans react to huge decision

“My daughter’s just had a baby. I’ve just become a grandad. I wasn’t ready. I haven’t got my staff ready.

“So unfortunately, those opportunities have come at the wrong time, if you like.

“But if the right call comes my way, the right club, the right challenge, and I’ve got my people set, which I will have at some point, I’ll take that challenge on because it’s in me.”

Gerrard added that Rangers as a club suited him “to a tee” at the time and stated he would want to return to management “at a team that’s going to compete to win.”

Now, in a fresh development, the BBC are reporting that Rangers ARE open to making Gerrard the club’s manager once again.

But the report also claims that the Ibrox club are themselves waiting to find out whether or not Gerrard himself is interested in making a stunning return to the dugout in Glasgow.

TalkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs also adds that Gers chiefs are waiting to discover if a move for Gerrard would be financially viable.

Gerrard is the odds-on favourite with the bookies to take over for a second stint as Rangers manager.

Former Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche was also one of the very early favourites.

But it’s been reported that the 54-year old will NOT be in contention for the job.

Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh and vice-chairman Paraag Marathe released an open letter to fans in the wake of Martin’s dismissal.

They Ibrox supremos admitted they’d got it WRONG in appointing the former Scotland international and said they were both “deeply involved” in the search for his successor.
