Luke Shaw breaks silence after Roy Keane’s stinging criticism that he is ‘stealing a living’ at Man Utd

LUKE SHAW was “hurt” by Roy Keane’s stinging criticism of his display in the Manchester derby — but admits the former United skipper was right.

The long-serving Red Devils defender was slammed for his  performance in last week’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester City.

Keane said Shaw, 30, has been “getting away with murder” and “stealing a living” for years, adding that he never wants to tackle anyone.

The England defender was asked about the  comments after giving an improved display in United’s 2-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday.

He said: “People have opinions and sometimes you just have to take it on the chin.

“Roy Keane’s got a lot of experience. He was one of the best captains ever for Man United.

“Of course it hurts. But criticism is part of being a football player. I  listen to it.

“I think he was right. Last week, I wasn’t at my level at all — I don’t need Roy Keane to tell me that.”

Shaw, who signed for United in 2014, has had a miserable time with injuries in recent years but boss Ruben Amorim still clearly has faith in him.

And the full-back believes his gaffer’s trust is crucial.

Shaw added: “The most important thing is knowing how good I can be.

“The manager knows that and my managers in the past knew that.

“I’m always in the team and I’m always playing, so there must be something  the managers believe in.”

What he really needs now after missing so much football in recent seasons is a run of games and for his performances to be at the top level.

And he was a long way short of that at the Etihad as Erling Haaland went past him like he was not there when scoring City’s second.

Shaw added: “I’m not getting any younger  and I need to be consistent.

“I’ve had a lot of ups and downs but now it’s about keeping that  consistency at a high level.

“I know I can do that — that’s why last week hurt me a lot, because that’s not my level.

“And the criticism is what people understand. But  I take it on the chin, listen to it and move on.”

Despite United’s victory on Saturday, there was criticism for another 30-something in Casemiro for his red card in first-half stoppage time.

The Brazilian midfielder, 33, had headed United into a two-goal lead and they were in control until he picked up a second booking.

Shaw said: “He’s an extremely experienced player. He’ll be disappointed but it’s not individuals, it’s a team. It’s a team effort all the time.”
