The Los Angeles Chargers have run the ball well (at least when J.K. Dobbins has played) and played tough defense this season. That is the recipe Jim Harbaugh likes for success. But it will only go so far, at least this season.

It has been clear that the most potent Chargers team features Justin Herbert being able to drive the ball down the field with his precision passing and strong arm. But without the weapons to make that happen on the receiving end, it’s like a beautiful sports car with no engine.

The Chargers have been without Dobbins and on Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, the absence of wide receiver Ladd McConkey was a glaring one. Now, the team’s top tight end is also set to miss some time, with injured reserve being a possibility.

Chargers starting tight end Will Dissly will miss some time

Dissly was injured just before halftime in Week 14 and it’s going to be a tough loss. Stone Smartt came on in relief of Dissly and played well, catching three passes for 54 yards, but Dissly has developed a good connection with Herbert.

Brought in for his blocking, Dissly has turned into the Chargers’ No. 1 receiving tight end as their other free-agent signing this offseason, Hayden Hurst, has had a quiet year, catching only seven passes for 65 yards.

Tucker Fisk is the only other tight end on the 53-man roster. Eric Tomlinson and McCallan Castles are on the practice squad.
