JOHN TOSHACK made a rare public appearance at Real Madrid’s clash with Real Sociedad.
The Liverpool and Wales legend has been in a health fight since 2022 after suffering from pneumonia due to Covid.
As a result of the aggressive infection, he was forced into intensive care in Spain.
He had to go on a ventilator to assist his breathing for five days.
Having overcome the illness Toshack, 76, entered the pitch at the Reale Arena in San Sebastian on Saturday before the 2-1 win.
He was given a warm embrace by manager and former Red Xabi Alonso.
He was pictured on the sideline sitting in a chair receiving a gold and diamond badge from Sociedad’s president Jokin Aperribay.
Alonso considers Toshack as one of the most important figures in his own career.
He has previously said: “I would not have had the success I have had if it was not for John Toshack
“I was on loan in the Spanish second division when he called me back to play for Real Sociedad and the team were not in a good situation.
“I was 19, but he said: ‘I have the confidence in you that you can help turn this season around.’
“Since he put that confidence in me I have never looked back.”
The badge given to Toshack was to honour him for his time managing Sociedad.
He led the Basque side in 386 games in all competitions as the boss across three separate spells.
He enjoyed success with Sociedad as he won the 1987 Copa del Rey.
Toshack was given a standing ovation by the supporters in the ground and was able to meet all of the players.
He also lifted a trophy as the manager of Real Madrid as he led the team to the LaLiga title in 1990.
During his playing career, he made 247 appearances for Liverpool and scored 96 goals.
The striker helped the Red win three First Division titles and the European Cup in 1977.
