Lions weren’t picked as team most likely to win first Super Bowl

After they went 3-13-1 in Dan Campbell’s first year as head coach, the Detroit Lions were laughed at for the decision, and it was expected that they continue to be one of the worst teams in the league until his eventual firing.

However, since then, Campbell and the Lions have seen improvement in their record each of the last three seasons, putting up a 36-15 record with two first-place finishes in the NFC North.

Campbell even led Detroit to an NFC Championship game in 2023, and they made the postseason again in 2024, but they were eliminated by the Washington Commanders in the divisional round.

With the 2025 season on the horizon, many expect the Lions to be in the mix again when the postseason comes around. However, NFL analyst Eric Edholm recently refused to rank Detroit as the team without a Super Bowl that’s most likely to hoist a Lombardi Trophy for the first time this year.

Instead, he had the Lions as second in those rankings behind the Buffalo Bills. The Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals and Houston Texans rounded out Edholm’s top five.

While it could be argued that the Lions have the better overall roster, the Bills still have Josh Allen, coming off an MVP season, and having that top-tier quarterback in the NFL will always put one team over another on paper.

Detroit has a good chance of making it back to the postseason for the third year in a row for the first time since the merger. However, if they don’t capitalize and win their first Super Bowl, their window may close quicker than they expected.

How fun would it be to see the Bills and the Lions going head-to-head for their first Super Bowl in franchise history? The parade that follows for the victor should be a national holiday.
