The 2025 NFL Draft is set to kick off on Thursday in Green Bay, and though the Detroit Lions are prepared to add another impact player to the roster with the No.28 overall, the team could also move on from one of their rising stars.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, some people he has spoken to around the NFL believe the Lions could trade wide receiver Jameson Williams in the near future.
“Receiver’s another spot to consider—with a fifth-year option decision coming on Jameson Williams, and some in NFL circles believing he could be traded,” Breer wrote.
Detroit could be willing to move on from Williams, as he has had a few off-the-field issues to start his career and is projected to make around $15.4 million on his fifth-year option, which general manager Brad Holmes may not want to pay.
More fuel was added to the fire when Williams posted a few cryptic messages on his Instagram story. He also unfollowed the Lions on the social media app.
If Williams is traded, CBS Sports’ Bryan DeArdo lists the Dallas Cowboys as a potential landing spot for the young receiver.
A lot of mocks have the Cowboys using the No. 1 overall pick to select Texas receiver Matthew Golden. But if they are about to acquire Williams, Dallas could instead use that pick to address either cornerback or the offensive line, two other positions that need help. On paper, Williams would be a nice complement to CeeDee Lamb, similar to how he complemented Lions All-Pro Amon-Ra St. Brown in 2024.

After a lackluster first two seasons in the league, Williams had a breakout 2024 campaign. The former Alabama standout hauled in 58 receptions for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games last year. The 24-year-old is one of the most dynamic and exhilarating young playmakers in football and hasn’t reached his ceiling yet.
Dallas must acquire another capable receiver for quarterback Dak Prescott, as CeeDee Lamb can’t do all the work. Williams would form an electric duo with Lamb and give the Cowboys’ offense another explosive threat.
However, there is some risk involved in trading for Williams. The 2022 No.12 overall pick has yet to show consistency in his career, and Dallas could be hesitant to pay him a lucrative contract extension in the future. Spotrac projects Williams’ new deal will be worth $59 million over three seasons, which averages to around $19.7 million annually.
Williams landing with the Cowboys would be intriguing, but we still find it hard to believe that he won’t be on the Lions roster in 2025, as Detroit still needs him to make a Super Bowl run.
