League-altering Steelers trade pitch lands million star receiver to pair with DK Metcalf

The Pittsburgh Steelers still have a few needs that must be addressed before the start of the 2025 season, especially wide receiver.

After trading away George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh lacks reliable receiving options on the perimeter for quarterback Aaron Rodgers outside of DK Metcalf. Robert Woods is currently slated to be the team’s No.2 receiver, and he isn’t more than just a solid depth piece.

The Steelers could look towards free agency to fill the need. However, FOX Sports believes general manager Omar Khan could also target wide receiver Chris Olave in a trade with the New Orleans Saints.

“In the immediate future, Olave would give the Steelers a budding star receiver on a rookie deal, which they don’t currently have, and form a dynamic, one-two punch with Metcalf. It would be a move that indicates the Steelers are all-in on Rodgers. Coughing up a future second- and fourth-round pick for Olave is worth it — especially if he becomes the oomph their offense needed,” what FOX Sports had to say about Olave being a potential target for the Steelers.

The Saints could look to trade Olave, as the franchise is set to enter a massive rebuild, and the young receiver could fetch them a nice return on the market. Olave is also eligible for an extension soon, and New Orleans may not want to pay him top dollar.

Pittsburgh should try to acquire the Ohio State product if he’s on the market. Though Olave missed nine games in 2024 and only tallied 400 yards, the 24-year-old posted two straight 1,000-yard campaigns to start his career in 2022 and 2023. He has also dealt with subpar quarterback play for most of his career but has still found a way to be productive.

Pairing Metcalf with Olave would give the Steelers a dynamic receiving duo and make life much easier for Rodgers. Acquiring Olave shouldn’t cost a ton of draft capital, but signing him to a long-term deal could be tricky, especially with Metcalf also being on a lucrative multi-year contract.

Overall, we expect Olave to be on the Saints in 2025. However, a trade to the Steelers in the future isn’t totally off the table, though making the money work will be difficult. The 2022 first-round pick also stated that he wants to spend the rest of his career in New Orleans.
