Lamont Roach Jr. Refuses To Let Second WBC Title Chance Slip Away

Lamont Roach Jr. expects William Zepeda to bring everything he has into tonight’s vacant WBC lightweight title fight. He insists grit alone will not be enough.

Roach lived through the same situation Zepeda now faces. The challenger fell short in his initial chance to capture a world belt before working his way back into elite contention. That experience leaves him with little doubt about the Mexican contender’s mindset, yet he maintains his own motivation reaches another level.

“I’ve been in the position he’s been. Second chance for a world title. Came up short the first time. I’ve been exactly where he’s been, so I know he’s hungry. But nothing’s stopping this desire that I have right here,” said Roach to Secondsout, talking about Zepeda’s recent loss to Shakur Stevenson.

The Washington, D.C., native enters the bout after consecutive draws against Gervonta Davis and Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, results that kept him from leaving the ring with top honors despite strong performances. Another close fight carries little appeal.

Roach explained that Zepeda presents a different challenge than either Davis or Cruz, requiring tactical adjustments on multiple fronts. His team studied film for tendencies they view as exploitable while preparing for the possibility that Zepeda changes his approach.

The emotional stakes extend beyond winning another title. Roach views the moment as validation for refusing to lose faith after previous disappointments.

“It means a whole lot because it speaks to my testament. It speaks to me not giving up. It speaks to me not being discouraged. It speaks about me just being the best fighter that I can be and achieving my goals,” said Roach.

Redemption remains the common thread linking both fighters. Zepeda returns for a second shot following his earlier setback, while Roach seeks the prize that narrowly escaped him twice. Both have plenty riding on the outcome, but Roach feels shared desire does not guarantee equal resolve. Tonight will reveal whether that conviction becomes the difference in the fight.
