Lamont Roach wants to see how WBA lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis reacts when he starts landing his power shots on him this Saturday night in their headliner at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) feels he has enough power to dent Tank’s chin and get him in trouble. But even if he doesn’t hurt him, he feels he’s got the technical ability to go twelve rounds to win a decision.
Roach’s Plan
Davis-Roach will be shown live on PBC on Prime Video PPV this Saturday, March 1st. Boxing fans have been grumbling about the $79.95 event price after being spoiled by the Riyadh Season cards, but this is a good card with many interesting fights for the fans.
Tank (30-0, 28 KOs) hasn’t said who he plans on fighting next, but it could be Shakur Stevenson or another big name. He must face a popular fighter to preserve his status as the ‘Face of Boxing.’
“We’re going to see how he reacts when he gets hit with this punch, especially a clean one,” said Lamont Roach to the Sean Zittel YouTube channel, talking about his fight against WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis this Saturday night in Brooklyn.
“Yeah, for sure. We’re going to find out,” said Roach when asked if he has the chin to take Gervonta’s power for 12 rounds. “From the outside, you can say that [Tank being the more explosive puncher]. I am a boxer, and he can punch.”
Roach will have to box like he’s never done before to avoid getting knocked out and win a decision against Tank Davis on Saturday night. He’s knocked out his last four opponents since 2022, and no one has made it past the ninth round against him.
The last guy to go the distance against Davis was Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz in 2021, and he took some huge shots in that fight. Tank injured his left hand in the fight and was fighting with just his right through the second half.
Roach is a weaker puncher than everyone Davis has fought, and he won’t have anything to keep him off. He won’t respect his jab if that’s all he’s got.
Davis’ Power
“He can hit, has nice reflexes, and he has a nice boxer IQ. There’s nothing you can deny about that, but it’s just about what I know I got,” Roach said. “I know I have everything to match what he has or neutralize what he has. I would love for him to do that,” said Lamont when asked if he would like for Tank to come forward behind his high guard like he did against Frank Martin and Mario Barrios.
“I don’t think that’s going to happen, but if it does, it’s definitely going to be up for ‘Fight of the Year.’ King of. I’ve been here before,” said Roach when asked if being a big underdog is motivation for him. “I’m not known in the spotlight. So, that’s probably a thing, and because I lost to Jamel [Herring]. So, that probably tainted it a little bit.”
It probably won’t matter if Tank Davis comes forward with a high guard all night long. He’s going to connect with something big eventually, and it’s going to be up to Roach to take his power.
