Khan’s Inside Scoop: Crawford to Outbox and Beat Canelo

Amir Khan says he’s leaning toward Terence Crawford to defeat undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez on September 13th. Khan states that he fought both fighters and felt that Canelo (63-2-2, 39 KOs) was “easy to hit.”

Amir Khan’s Expert Prediction

“I fought both of them. I lean more toward Crawford. He’s the better fighter, the better boxer. Easy to hit, Canelo,” said Amir Khan to Secondsout, giving the edge to Terence Crawford over Canelo Alvarez in their mega-fight on September 13th.

Crawford stopped Khan with a low blow in their fight on April 20, 2019. Khan’s trainer, Vergil Hunter, let the referee, Tony Fields, know that he couldn’t continue due to the pain. Three years earlier, Canelo knocked Khan unconscious in the sixth round on May 7, 2016.

“Canelo still has that power, but I feel like Crawford has his number. Crawford has put on muscle well, and he’s holding the weight well. I think he was at 186 the other day. He looks strong and lean. So, I don’t think he’ll have a problem,” said Khan.

It’s impossible to say that Crawford has Canelo’s number because he’s not fought the Mexican star yet. Crawford appears larger than Canelo now, having gained weight in the last month, and looks different from when he last fought on May 3, 2024, against Israil Madrimov.

Why Crawford Beats Canelo

“He won’t get pushed around because Crawford is a decent wrestler as well. He’s very strong. I’ve seen him take down heavyweights. So, I don’t think he’ll have a problem with Canelo’s weight and size,” said Khan.

Canelo doesn’t use wrestling or roughhouse tactics to win his fights. He walks his opponents down, unloads big shots, and counters what they throw back. Khan should know that from their battle in 2016. Canelo knocked Khan unconscious in the sixth round. He should have remembered.

The 60-40 Split Explained

“It’s who has the best boxing skills, and obviously, we think Crawford has. But then again, Canelo looked good in his last fight [against William Scull] as well against the Cuban at Riyadh Season. I give it 60-40 to Crawford,” said Khan.

Ringside Expert’s Take

Former IBF super middleweight champion Scull showed a lot of skills, power, speed, and excellent combination punching against Canelo in their fight on May 3rd. At 33, the 5’11” Scull showed skills and power that made it difficult for Alvarez. He won the fight, but it wasn’t as easy as the wide scores made it appear.

Fighting Scull was a good move for Canelo because it helped get him ready for the movement and technical ability that Crawford possesses.
