Kambosos Jr. Battles Jake Wyllie, Needing a Stellar Performance to Secure IBF Title Opportunity Against Richardson Hitchins

George Kambosos Jr. isn’t discouraged by the three defeats that he’s piled up in the last three years going into his fight this Saturday night against Jake Wyllie at the Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney Olympic Park, in Sydney, Australia.

The former unified lightweight champion Kambosos (21-3, 10 KOs) views his losses as lessons for him to learn from and as being part of the sport. If any fighter hangs around long enough, they’re going to get beaten unless they’re not taking any risky fights.

Kambosos, 31, is his replacement opponent, 24-year-old Wyllie (16-1, 15 KOs), in the 12-round headliner on DAZN. In the co-feature, WBC world female featherweight champion Skye Nicolson (12-0, 1 KOs) defends against unbeaten Tiara Brown (18-0, 11 KOs) in a ten-round contest.

Kambosos needs one of his better performances on Saturday because he cannot afford to lose this fight because a world title shot is in the cards for him against IBF 140-lb champion Richardson Hitchins if he’s victorious.

George has gone 1-3 since 2022, and you can make a strong argument that he should be 0-4. His one win in his last four fights was a questionable 12-round majority decision against Maxi Hughes in 2023.

The Warrior’s Mindset

“Look at the Muhammad Alis. Look at the Roberto Durans, Sugar Ray Leonard and Duran. They all got losses. Imagine them retiring after one or two losses. Nah,” said George Kambosos Jr. to Matchroom Boxing, letting fans know that he’s not discouraged from losing three times in his career.

“They’re all warriors,” said George Kambosos Sr. “They’re the great escape Houdinis.”

“The way I look at it is it’s not wins and losses. It’s wins and listens. You keep getting up. We lose. Everybody loses in life everything. We lose every day,” said Kambosos Jr. “We keep bouncing back, and that’s how I am in my sport and it’s a sport. I’m a warrior in my chosen sport, and I keep doing what I do best. I keep stepping up and fighting the best fighters in the sport.”
