“The Emperor” Unraveling?
The former unified three-belt lightweight champion Kambosos (21-3, 10 KOs) repeatedly pointed at Wyllie (16-1, 15 KO) during their face-off, seemingly letting him know what’s in store for him on Saturday night.
Kambosos then turned to the sparse crowd of media, pointing at them, talking about how he was going to make a “statement.” It was very strange. He had kind of a wild-eyed look to him, voice cracking, and jumpy. He Kambosos looked like he was about to snap.
That look on the Emperor’s face was about to lose control, ready to go postal. I hope they got a good referee working on Saturday in case George starts to go nuts inside the ring. He looked like someone that has been on the battlefield far too long. Maybe Kambosos’ last fight against Vasily Lomachenko took something out of him, leaving him in this state of mind.
The pressure of the moment seems to be getting to him, with promoter Eddie Hearn saying his career will be over if he loses, and how Wyllie could take his place as the challenger for IBF light welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins in June. Kambosos was counting on him being the one that faces Hitchins, but Hearn made it known that he’ll be replaced if he loses.
Wyllie’s Confidence
“I’m feeling great. I made weight as easy as ever. I’m here. Watch me here tomorrow night and put on a show,” said Jake Wyllie to DAZN Boxing after weighing in successfully on Thursday. “I’m looking to get this fight out of the way and be the new champ.
“This can change my life. I’m more than ready and focused. I will get through George Kambosos on Saturday night. Turn up tomorrow night, and you’ll see,” said Wyllie when asked how he’ll beat Kambosos Jr.
“Look at me. Look how good I look. The weight cut was easy, and I’m ready to make a statement,” said Kambosos. “Like I said. I respect the kid. I don’t want to disrespect him, but tomorrow.
“All you ones disrespecting me. I’m going to make a statement out of him tomorrow because of you guys. I know he’s been running all night and been in saunas, trying to cut the weight. Good stuff, champ. You got the weight. Tomorrow, I’m going to put it on you. I’m back, baby. I’m going to showcase tomorrow, make a statement out of him, and then we’ll see after that,” said Kambosos.
