RB LEIPZIG are stepping up their pursuit of Harvey Elliott – which could pave the way for Xavi Simons to join Chelsea.

The German side, overseen by ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, are discussing personal terms with the Reds midfielder ahead of a potential move.

Elliott, 22, is viewed as an ideal replacement for Simons, who is set on a move to Stamford Bridge.

Personal terms between Chelsea and the Dutch international are understood to be finalised – though an official bid from the Blues is yet to materialise.

Simons missed a recent friendly against Atalanta but has since returned to pre-season training.

Leipzig are holding out for around £60million for the 22-year-old and want to be sure they can replace him before sanctioning a deal.

Klopp is thought to be pushing hard for Elliott to be that replacement.

After limited playing time under Arne Slot last season, a move away from Anfield had long been expected this summer.

West Ham expressed an interest but were not keen on matching Liverpool’s £50m asking price.

The Hammers wanted to explore a loan move including an option to make it permanent next summer.

However, Elliott would prefer to move to a club playing European football.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are looking to sell striker Darwin Nunez to Saudi side Al-Hilal.

If the deal goes through, it would free up space and possibly funds for the Reds to make a move for Newcastle’s Alexandre Isak.
