Juan Carlos Becerril pulled off one of the biggest surprises on Saturday’s card in Las Vegas, stopping highly regarded prospect Dylan Capetillo in the third round at The Theater at Virgin Hotels. The scheduled four-round lightweight bout looked to be heading in Capetillo’s favor before Becerril turned everything around with one perfectly timed punch.
Capetillo (2-1, 1 KO), a 17-year-old Golden Boy Promotions prospect from Las Vegas, made a strong start and dropped Becerril with a left hook in the second round. The knockdown appeared to put the hometown fighter in control as he pressed the action against the unbeaten visitor from Tijuana.
Becerril (3-0, 2 KOs) stayed composed and waited for his opening. Late in the third round, he landed a crushing left hook that caught Capetillo flush and sent him crashing to the canvas. Capetillo beat the count, but his legs were unsteady, and he struggled to convince referee Thomas Taylor that he was ready to continue.
Taylor halted the contest at 2:59 of the third round, awarding Becerril a technical knockout after deciding Capetillo was no longer able to defend himself. The dramatic finish silenced the crowd and instantly changed the direction of the fight.
Capetillo entered the bout as one of Golden Boy’s youngest professional prospects after turning pro earlier this year. The setback serves as an early reminder of the risks young fighters face against opponents with confidence and punching power, even in the opening stages of their careers.
Becerril, meanwhile, leaves Las Vegas with the biggest victory of his career. After recovering from an early knockdown, the unbeaten Mexican prospect showed composure under pressure and seized his opportunity when it arrived, handing Capetillo the first defeat of his professional career.
