Jose Ramirez says Devin Haney made a mistake if he chose him as a tune-up opponent for their 144-lb catchweight fight on May 2nd on the Fatal Fury card at Times Square in New York City.
Garcia-Romero Goal
Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs) states that he’s going to be attacking Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) nonstop without taking any breaks like Ryan Garcia did last April. Jose says that after he defeats Haney, he wants to take on the winner of the Ryan vs. Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero clash. Those two are headlining the May 2nd event.
Turki Alalshikh hasn’t said whether the Haney-Ramirez fight will determine who will be the next opponent for the Garcia-Rolly victor. That would be a most logical way of doing it.
Devin’s career would be in the mud if he’s beaten by former WBC and WBO light welterweight champion Ramirez, as this fight is supposed to be a warm-up for the big-money rematch with Ryan Garcia in October. Some believe the sole reason Haney chose to sit on the sidelines since his loss to Kingry on April 20th last year is that he didn’t want to ruin his chances for the rematch by getting beaten.
Confidence Check
Haney’s self-confidence may be shot after Ryan mopped the deck with him in that fight, dropping him three times in a massacre at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. That fight may have taken the best out of Devin, leaving him in this risk-averse state.
Why has Devin chosen to relinquish his WBC 140-lb title, and sit inactive for an entire year if he still believed in himself? That loss to Ryan may have taken more out of Haney than just the physical beat punishment.
“Once I beat Devin Haney, I get the winner of Ryan and Rolly,” Jose Ramirez told ESNEWS about his vision after his fight against Devin Haney on May 2nd. “Devin Haney is a great fighter, but he fought at 135 against smaller guys.
“I sparred a lot of guys that he fought, like [George] Kambosos. I just know the type of fighter I am. I’m not worried about anybody. Hopefully, you accepted this fight because you wanted to fight the best, not because you wanted to fight a tune-up,” said Ramirez about his message to Haney. “If that’s the case, it was a big mistake. I’m looking forward to it. No,” said Jose when told that he won’t take rounds off against Haney like Ryan Garcia did in their fight on April 20th last year.
“I like Rolly,” said Ramirez, predicting Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero defeats Ryan Garcia in the Times Square event. “Ryan is a good fighter. He’s fast, doesn’t have too many tools in his toolbox, but he uses them really well. That makes him dangerous. It’s a tough fight.”
This could be it for Devin. If he loses to Ramirez by knockout, his career could be over. For him to continue on would likely depend on whether he could find a way to melt down to 135 like in the good old days, and reinvent himself against smaller guys.
