Jose Ramirez is walking straight into last-chance territory on the preliminary portion of Saturday’s card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The former unified light welterweight champion has tumbled down the pecking order so thoroughly that his welterweight debut against Alexis Rocha is taking place before the main broadcast even begins, in front of a mostly empty building.
At 34, Ramirez (29-3, 18 KOs) has run completely out of excuses. Back-to-back decision losses to Arnold Barboza Jr. and Devin Haney stripped away his elite status, leaving his career hanging by a thread. He has fought only three times since March 2022, managing a solitary win over an ancient Rances Barthelemy.
Those defeats exposed an alarming decline. The relentless engine that once wore down contenders looked sluggish, his feet stuck to the canvas, and he had zero answers when skilled technicians refused to engage. Moving to 147 pounds gives Ramirez’s drained body a break from the scales, but it will not magically bring back his reflexes or hand speed against naturally larger, heavier punchers.
Rocha (26-2-1, 16 KOs) is a fringe contender who has already reached his ceiling. Giovani Santillan knocked him out in six rounds, and Rocha struggled to a draw with Raul Curiel. Beating a faded Joseph Diaz did nothing to prove Rocha belongs among the elite.
That makes Saturday night stressful for Ramirez. Getting outpointed by Haney is one thing, but getting beaten by Rocha is career suicide. A loss drops Ramirez into the role of an overpriced stepping stone for young prospects.
Once a dominant unified champion who stood one victory from capturing every belt at 140 pounds, Ramirez is now in an absolute dogfight to save his professional relevance.
Both fighters made 146.5 pounds Friday. Their ten-round bout streams during the Paramount+ preliminaries starting at 5 p.m. ET.
