Jonnu Smith’s agent drops truth bomb on Dolphins trade rumors after record-setting year

The Dolphins may be weighing their options at tight end, but Jonnu Smith is not seeking a move. After a report last week connected the veteran to trade discussions involving the Steelers, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, made it clear that his client hopes to remain in Miami.

Speaking Sunday during an appearance on WSVN, Rosenhaus said Smith has no interest in leaving the team where he just delivered the best season of his career.

“Jonnu would definitely like to stay in Miami. That’s his first choice,” Rosenhaus said, via Miami Herald reporter Barry Jackson. “This is where he lives in the offseason. He had a record-breaking season last year… His dream team is the Dolphins.”

Smith’s desire to stay comes amid reports that the Dolphins have engaged in trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers, largely due to Smith’s connection with Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. The two worked together during Jonnu’s early years in Tennessee and again in Atlanta, where Smith carved out a consistent role in Arthur’s system. With the Steelers looking to retool their offense under Russell Wilson, adding a familiar and productive tight end like Smith would offer immediate stability in the passing game.

While Pittsburgh has been the most prominently linked team, they are not alone. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, multiple franchises have been “nosing around” veteran tight ends, including Smith, as they look to bolster their offensive weapons. Teams with unproven tight end depth or young quarterbacks in need of a dependable target have reportedly inquired, though no formal offers have been confirmed. Smith’s value as both a pass-catcher and blocker makes him one of the more versatile options available on the market, should Miami choose to move him.

Smith is entering the final year of a two-year, $8.4 million contract with the Dolphins and is set to earn $4.8 million in 2025. After a career-best season with 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns, Smith is seeking a new deal that reflects his increased value.

Despite the trade rumors and contract negotiations, Rosenhaus emphasized that Smith’s preference is to remain in Miami, where he has strong ties and has found success in Mike McDaniel’s offensive system. The Dolphins, however, must weigh the financial implications and roster considerations as they navigate these discussions.
