Michael Pirotton trained in a cramped ring to prepare for Johnny Fisher’s pressure. On Saturday, the question is what happens when Fisher reaches him. Pirotton says he has the better boxing skills, but he will need to land with enough force to make Fisher think twice about coming forward.
Fisher headlines Zuffa Boxing 11 at London’s Copper Box Arena after two uncomfortable outings. Dave Allen knocked him out last May, and Ivan Balaz put him down before Fisher came back to win in Monaco. Pirotton has watched both Allen fights and knows that Fisher can be hurt. Fisher knows it too, whatever confidence he takes from getting off the floor against Balaz.
“Skills for skills, I think I have the better of him,” Pirotton told Sky Sports. He said his team sparred in a small ring so that Saturday’s ring would feel larger. It is a sensible way to rehearse fighting under pressure, though the extra space will only help if he does something with it.
Circling without making Fisher pay for each entry would let the bigger man keep advancing until Pirotton runs out of room.
Fisher has already identified the route he wants to close. He told Sky Sports that Pirotton tends to move straight onto the back foot, and he plans to cut off the ring. Fisher also doubts Pirotton is a particularly big puncher. If that read is correct, he can press harder and make the Belgian spend more of the fight near the ropes.
The danger for Fisher is following rather than cutting him off. He needs to step across Pirotton’s exits with his feet in position to punch. A jab to the chest could interrupt that movement and give Fisher a target before he throws his right hand. Simply rushing across the canvas would offer Pirotton chances to counter, particularly if Fisher gets impatient when the crowd urges him forward.
Fisher says he has worked with Tony Sims on where to position himself and when to attack or back off. Those lessons face their first real test if Pirotton catches him early. After the Allen knockout and the Balaz knockdown, Fisher cannot assume he can charge through a bad moment and sort it out later. He will have to stay with the plan when his instincts tell him to swing his way out of trouble.
The body is another target if Fisher gets close. Hooks downstairs during exchanges would make Pirotton work harder to keep moving as the rounds pass. That is a more reliable way to slow his legs than hoping he tires from circling alone. Pirotton, in turn, needs counters that stop Fisher from taking those steps inside for free.
Pirotton has made a bold claim about his skills. Fisher has promised a more thoughtful version of the pressure that made him popular. Their fight should tell us which claim survives contact: whether Pirotton can box while making Fisher respect his punches, and whether Fisher can apply his strength without repeating the mistakes that nearly cost him his last fight.
Zuffa signed Fisher to sell tickets to London crowds, not to put on masterclasses against world-class operators. Matchmakers pick an opponent like Pirotton because the numbers say he possesses negligible punch resistance and zero real concussive power. On paper, it looks like a tailor-made showcase to get the Romford fighter a highlight reel knockout for his promotional launch.
The catch is Fisher himself. Anyone who gets flattened by Dave Allen and subsequently dropped by Ivan Balaz carries fundamental flaws that matchmakers cannot hide forever. Fisher lacks head movement, charges in with his chin pointing straight into the rafters, and leaves his defense completely behind the second he decides to punch.
Against Allen, he was exposed by basic veteran timing. Against Balaz, he showed that even modest club fighters can clip him if he gets reckless. Pirotton is limited, but he is not coming to stand in front of Fisher and trade leather. He knows his only path is to stay on his toes, turn Fisher, and throw straight shots down the pipe while the Brit lumbers forward.
If Fisher lunges with his feet square, Pirotton does not need heavyweight dynamite to buzz him. Heavyweight balance is fragile, and Fisher has proven his punch resistance deteriorates quickly when he gets careless.
Calling it a walk in the park ignores everything Fisher has shown in his recent ring appearances. It will only become an easy night if Fisher exhibits actual discipline, works behind a firm jab, and chops Pirotton down to the body. If the noise from the Copper Box gets into his head and he starts winging wide hooks with no defensive awareness, he will walk straight into another avoidable crisis. With Fisher, disaster is always lurking just one mistimed charge away.
