Joey Jones dead at 70: Former Chelsea, Liverpool and Wrexham star dies as tributes pour in for ‘inspiration’

FORMER Liverpool defender Joey Jones has died aged 70.

The left-back played for the Reds from 1975-1978 and also spent three years at Chelsea after signing in 1982.

Former Liverpool player John Aldridge posted: “More sad news folks Joey Jones passed away last night.

“What a lovely man and an inspirational full back who gave his heart and soul in a red shirt and for all the clubs he played for!

“Our thoughts are with joeys family! I’m a lucky man to have met him many times.”

Welshman Jones started his career at Wrexham before joining Liverpool – winning the league and European Cup in 1977.

He returned to Wrexham in 1978 for a further four seasons before leaving for Chelsea.

With the Blues, he helped them win the second division in 1984.

Jones moved to Huddersfield in 1985 for two seasons before finishing his career back at Wrexham in 1992 after five final seasons.

He also made 72 international appearances for Wales – scoring once.

After retiring, Jones worked as an Under 18’s and Reserve team coach for Wrexham until 2017.

He also had a brief spell as caretaker boss in 2001 – taking over from Brian Flynn before Denis Smith came in.

Jones also had a youth team ambassador role at Wrexham.

Mickey Thomas, who played with Jones at Wrexham, posted a heartfelt tribute.

Thomas said: “This morning I lost my best friend and soul mate, Sir Joey our memories will never fade – Today my heart is broken.

“Love you Sir Joey RIP. My condolences are with Janice and all the family.”
