Joao Pedro pays off third of £60m Chelsea transfer fee against Fluminense as Club World Cup prize money broken down

JOAO PEDRO paid off a third of his Chelsea transfer fee as two goals against Fluminense sealed a spot in the Club World Cup final.

The £60million signing from Brighton made an instant impact on his full debut as he struck twice against former side Fluminense.

Pedro’s wonder goals lit up the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with scorching conditions prompting several water breaks throughout Chelsea’s 2-0 win.

The 23-year-old showed his class by refusing to celebrate against Fluminense, where he started his career as a 10-year-old in 2011.

Pedro’s former Brazilian side certainly appreciated the gesture.

And he was embraced by numerous members of their staff at full-time as they congratulated Pedro on his new-found success.

However, Chelsea are sure to be equally delighted with the versatile striker.

That’s because they banked £22m by reaching Sunday’s final against either Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid.

The tasty chunk of cash has already paid off a third of Pedro’s £60m fee.

Incredibly, Chelsea’s total takeaway so far from the Club World Cup is a staggering £81.9m.

And should the Blues win the trophy in front of President Donald Trump, they will return to Blighty with £97m in the bank.

That would cover not only Pedro’s entire fee, but effectively the £30m spent on fellow new striker Liam Delap from Ipswich.

Speaking after the match, Pedro expressed his delight at firing Chelsea into Sunday’s final.

He said: “I’m very happy, the team controlled the game today and I think we did very well. Now we need to focus on the final.

“Yes (I expected to make an impact). Not two goals, but to help the team. I knew I could score today. That’s what I did.”
