Jets predicted to abandon Justin Fields experiment for explosive 28-TD quarterback

Jets predicted to abandon Justin Fields experiment for explosive 28-TD quarterback

The New York Jets will have a new quarterback in 2025 after moving on from veteran Aaron Rodgers this offseason.

Rodgers spent two seasons with the Jets, and neither went as planned. The veteran suffered a season-ending injury in his first game with the team in 2023, and then the team as a whole struggled to a 5-12 record in 2024.

As a result, the team added Justin Fields in free agency. Fields spent 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but wasn’t able to hold the starting job over Russell Wilson. The Jets, however, are hoping that Fields will finally live up to his potential on his third NFL team.

Fields’ deal is only for two years, though, and the passer has been wildly inconsistent in his career. Thus, it wouldn’t be completely surprising if the team was in the market for a new quarterback once again next offseason.

Brentley Weissman of Pro Football Network recently published a three-round 2026 mock draft. In the first round, Weissman had the Jets selecting South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers with the No. 2 pick.

Regarding that selection, Weissman offered the following:

If the New York Jets are picking this high in the draft, it likely means that the Justin Fields experience was a failure. In this case, the Jets take the quarterback with perhaps the highest upside in the 2026 class, South Carolina’s QB LaNorris Sellers.

Sellers has outstanding playmaking ability as he possesses exceptional quickness, play strength, and instincts. His ability to create big plays in and out of structure will surely intrigue NFL decision-makers.

Sellers is an intriguing prospect for sure. The dual-threat quarterback was a top prospect in high school and flashed for the Gamecocks in 2024.

Sellers threw for 2,534 yards with 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season. The quarterback also rushed for 674 yards and seven scores, showcasing his elite dual-threat ability.

It will be interesting to see how Sellers performs in 2025. If the quarterback plays up to his potential, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him be the first quarterback selected. Of course, Jets fans would be unhappy if the team is picking early in the draft once again, but Sellers appears to be a potentially franchise-altering talent.

As Weissman mentioned, if the Jets are picking this high, it likely means Fields isn’t the answer at quarterback. Fields’ contract isn’t prohibitive, either, so the former top pick likely won’t have the longest leash in New York.
