There’s enough evidence to suggest that the New York Jets have sorely missed their defensive captain in recent weeks, especially while defending the run.
Linebacker CJ Mosley has been unavailable for more than one month, but the grizzled veteran has taken a significant step toward returning this week. Mosley was a full participant at practice on Wednesday and Thursday as the Jets prepare to host the Seattle Seahawks on December 1.
“He’s going to give it a run. We’re going to see what he looks like, so he’ll practice today full, and then tomorrow will be the big test. Get pads on, get him into contact, and see how he responds with that, and if things go well, which I’m hopeful they will, he’ll go. If not, he won’t,” said Ulbrich on Wednesday morning in Florham Park.
Mosley last played on October 20 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He dressed for the Week 8 game against the New England Patriots before a neck injury popped up during pregame activities.
Between the neck problem and an earlier toe injury, Mosley has been limited to four appearances through the season’s first 11 games. He has totaled 17 tackles over 110 defensive snaps.
“He’s so unique in his ability to lead and elevate those around him, and he brings, not just leadership, but this confidence and poise and toughness. It’s hard to replicate, so he’s a special player. He’s a special man, and he’s hard to replace, he really is,” said Ulbrich.

The 32-year-old Mosley has been a tackling machine since signing with the Jets in 2019. He’s coming off three consecutive 150+ tackle seasons. He’s on the final year of a long-term contract and may be in his final weeks as a Jet.
Former safety Janine Sherwood has filled in for Mosley as a starter alongside Quincy Williams. The Jets rank 21st overall in run defense (130.1).
