‘Boots’ Faces the Proving Ground

Promoter Eddie Hearn expects Lima to give ‘Boots’ a tough test on Saturday night to make the fight entertaining while it lasts. Ennis (34-0, 30 KOs) looked thinner than his opponent, Lima (14-1, 10 KOs), despite coming in a little bit heavier.

Weights

  • Jaron Ennis 153.4 vs. Uisma Lima 153
  • Guido Vianello 247.4 vs. Alexis Barriere 237
  • Jose Roman 146.4 vs. Tahmir Smalls 146.8
  • Sean Diaz 122 vs. Dennis Thompson 121.4
  • Antonio Dunton-El Jr 133.4 vs. Zaquin Moses 132.2
  • James Wilkins 134.6 vs. Giorgio Visioli 135
  • Hylon Williams Jr 138.4 vs. Harley Mederos 141.6
  • Naheem Parker 141.6 vs. Justin Palmieri 136.4

There’s a lot of pressure on the former IBF and WBA welterweight champion Ennis to impress in his debut at 154. He’s done a lot of talking during the buildup to the fight, and he’s going to have to live up to it.

Hearn has also been pumping Ennis up, calling him the “successor’ to Terence Crawford. If ‘Boots’ doesn’t look like purse 24k gold on Saturday, fans are going to be all over Hearn, saying he’s been pushing fool’s gold on them all this time.

The fact is, we don’t know how good Ennis is because he’s glided through nine years in the pros without fighting any elite-level opposition.

Turned Down the Big Four — Why?

Thus far, the best name on his resume is Eimantas Stanionis, a basic slugger. It’s not like Ennis hasn’t had chances to fight the cream of the crop. He’s reportedly turned down fights against these fighters: Crawford, Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez, and Vergil Ortiz Jr.

“I don’t see anyone at 154 beating him. I don’t see anyone at 160 beating him. I actually think 160 is going to be his best weight as a fighter,” said Eddie Hearn to DAZN Boxing, talking about Jaron Ennis. “Even at 154, he made the weight much better than normal, but it’s still a struggle.

“He’s a big guy. He’s probably sparring at 160 or 165 pounds,” said Hearn about ‘Boots.’ “This guy is an unbelievable talent. You’re going to see something different from him tomorrow night. Jaron Ennis has got everything. ‘Boots’ has got the defensive skill set, and he’s got the spite, the power. He’ll walk you down and knock you out.”
