JANNIK SINNER’S Wimbledon quarter-final could be at risk as he undergoes an MRI scan today.
The world No1 was fortunate to get through on Monday night.
He trailed Grigor Dimitrov 6-3 7-5 2-2 on Centre Court when the Bulgarian appeared to tear his pectoral muscle.
Dimitrov retired in tears amid emotional scenes – as Sinner survived an almighty scare to progress.
The Italian, though, had his own injury scare.
Sinner took a heavy tumble very early on in the match on Centre Court and hurt his elbow.
He received treatment during a medical time-out during the second set.
And the Australian Open and US Open champion was spotted with ice strapped to his arm after the victory before conducting his media duties.
Sinner – who ironically axed his physiotherapist and trainer on the eve of Wimbledon – revealed he will have to be checked over today to ensure there is no significant damage.
He said last night: “It happened very early in the match, first game. It was quite an unfortunate fall.
“I have checked the videos a little bit, and it didn’t seem a tough one, but I still felt it quite a lot, especially on the serve and forehand.
“I could feel it.
“So let’s see. Tomorrow we are going to check to see how it is, and then we see.
“Here they have good ATP physios, in any case. The doctors are good.
“As I said, tomorrow we are going to check with MRI to see if there’s something serious, and then we try to adjust it.”
But if the MRI flags up some serious concerns, there is a chance Sinner could be forced to withdraw from the tournament to protect his elbow from further problems, especially ahead of the US hard-court swing.
Crucially, Sinner was not named on the list of practice court bookings for Tuesday – but the rest of Monday’s winners were – possibly hinting he is either not fit to play or he needs to maximise rest.
He is due to face big-serving American No10 seed Ben Shelton tomorrow for a place in the final four.
Shelton is being cheered on by his family, including sister Emma who has got time off from her job at Morgan Stanley to be at Wimbledon.
And his new girlfriend and US football star Trinity Rodman has also been in his box.
