Jai Opetaia has had enough of discussing sanctioning bodies, lawsuits, and the uncertain standing of Noel Mikaelian’s WBC cruiserweight title. He wants to settle the division in the ring, but boxing has supplied another obstacle before Saturday’s co-feature at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
“I’ve got no clue, man. It’s my job to win the fight, whether these sanctioning bodies jump on board or not,” Opetaia told reporters during Wednesday’s press conference. “What a circus. What an absolute circus, baby. It never ends. I’m not looking for a headline. I’m looking for a knockout punch. Headlines change every day, but my mission doesn’t.”
Don King has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Zuffa Boxing and TKO, arguing that Mikaelian remains under an exclusive promotional agreement with Don King Productions. The WBC title remains unresolved, while Opetaia’s Ring championship will be contested.
This is also a test of Zuffa’s power. The company wants its championships and streaming platform to carry enough value that fighters no longer depend on the four sanctioning organizations. One contract dispute has shown that promotional authority cannot be bypassed as easily as sanctioning fees.
Stylistically, Mikaelian presents a different problem from Brandon Glanton. Glanton advanced behind physical force in March, allowing Opetaia to counter through high-volume exchanges. Mikaelian prefers managing distance, interrupting attacks with clinches, and reducing the number of clean exchanges. The Australian must create openings rather than wait for them.
Activity favors Opetaia. He completed 12 hard rounds against Glanton six months ago, while Mikaelian has boxed only twice since November 2023. A cautious style requires sharp timing, and inactivity becomes dangerous against his hand speed and southpaw angles.
The legal burden also falls more heavily on Mikaelian. His promotional relationship, WBC championship, and negotiating power are all tied to Saturday’s result. That strain may force him to take early risks that his usual approach avoids.
Beating Mikaelian would strengthen Opetaia’s claim as cruiserweight’s leading fighter and place David Benavidez within commercial reach. The organizations may still prevent him from collecting every belt, proving why divisional supremacy and a complete belt collection are no longer the same thing.
