David Benavidez talked his way into a corner the moment Jai Opetaia accepted his Cinco de Mayo challenge without demanding a single concession. By surrendering location, timing, and promotional perks, Opetaia instantly stripped away every standard excuse fighters use to dodge a dangerous unification.
“I feel like me and Benavidez will fight. He’s got most of the belts at the moment. I really still believe in the undisputed dream,” Opetaia told the Mr Verzace podcast. “All I need is him to sign the contract. Let’s get the fight over the line. Whether the date works for me or not, I’m in my position. These guys are the ones picking the dates. Send me the date. Send me the location. We’ll be there.”
Benavidez climbed into the ring after Opetaia stopped Noel Mikaelian in the ninth round last Saturday at T-Mobile Arena. He called Opetaia the cruiserweight “boogeyman” before presenting himself as the man hired to kill one.
Now Benavidez must turn that television line into an actual fight.
The five-month turnaround presents the first major obstacle. Benavidez is due to challenge WBC cruiserweight champion Michal Cieslak on December 12 in Phoenix. A broken hand, severe cut, or punishing twelve-round struggle would wreck the proposed May timetable. Cieslak is not a ceremonial opponent placed there to introduce Benavidez to 200 pounds.
Opetaia presents an even harsher physical test. Benavidez built his reputation around volume, pressure, and forcing smaller men toward the ropes. Opetaia is an explosive southpaw with cruiserweight power, fast feet, and a lethal counter left hand. Marching forward behind a high guard carries a brutal price against a natural 200-pound champion.
The Australian has also flipped the promotional narrative. Benavidez is being treated as the star granting an opportunity, but Opetaia pursued Gilberto Ramirez, Lawrence Okolie, and Mikaelian long before Benavidez arrived in the division. His interest belongs to the belts rather than the personality holding them.
With both fighters connected to Zuffa Boxing, no network rivalry blocks the match. Sanctioning body politics might create headaches, but Opetaia erased location and timing from the list of outs. Benavidez only needs to defeat Cieslak and put pen to paper.
