Jack Catterall Teams Up with Bozy Ennis in a Bid to Revitalize His Welterweight Aspirations

Jack Catterall Teams Up with Bozy Ennis in a Bid to Revitalize His Welterweight Aspirations

Jack Catterall will be teaming up wth coach Derek ‘Bozy’ Ennis to begin training in Philadelphia now. It’s an odd pairing, as Bozy, the father of former unified welterweight champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, is known for being more of a coach who teaches offense.

The ‘British Shakur’ Problem

That style of fighting may not work with Catterall, who some call ‘The British Shakur.’ Bozy isn’t a miracle worker, someone who can magically transform Jack into a copy of his son, ‘Boots’ Ennis. Trying to change Catterall may break him as a fighter because the Stevenson style is so ingrained in him.

With Catterall’s lack of power and his Shakur-esque fighting style, training with Bozy may not yield the results he needs to become a viable welterweight contender. He might be better off working with Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre, so he could train side-by-side with Terence Crawford to mimic his style of fighting.

Is This a Last-Ditch Effort?

Some view it as a last-ditch effort by Catterall (31-2, 13 KOs) to rebuild his career following his recent 12-round split decision defeat against Arnold Barboza Jr. on February 15th. Jack did not look good in that fight, as he was out-punched and outboxed by Barboza Jr.

In Catterall’s last fight, he moved up to welterweight and defeated Harlem Eubank by a seven-round technical unanimous decision on July 5, 2025. The contest ended when both fighters suffered cuts in the seventh from a clash of heads. At the time of the stoppage, Catterall was ahead 69-66, 69-66, and 69-65.

Catterall’s wins over former champions: Regis Prograis, Josh Taylor, and Jorge Linares. He hasn’t beaten anyone of note who was still in their prime, and his recent performances against Barboza Jr. and Eubank suggest that he may never.

A Wide-Open Welterweight Field

What Catterall has going for him is that the welterweight division is lacking in talent now that Jaron Ennis has moved up to 154. That was the last remaining phenom. Now that he’s gone. It’s left mostly B-level fighters to go for the top spots.

Potential Million-Dollar Paydays

Even if Catterall never wins a world title at welterweight, he can still make millions if he can get a chance to fight some of these fighters:

  • Devin Haney
  • Ryan Garcia
  • Conor Benn
  • Teofimo Lopez

The problem is, none of those fighters would likely be interested in fighting Catterall because he tends to hit, hold, and move. It’s the exact copy of the style that Shakur Stevenson uses, but with a lot more holding.
