The New York Islanders mounted a rags-to-riches 2023-24 season, going from 5-6-5 and 19-15-11 to 39-27-16 and in the playoffs. Patrick Roy’s team will be looking to build off that positive late-season momentum in the ’24-25 campaign, and Islanders fans will be clamoring to see their squad live and in person.

Roy certainly proved his worth as a coach last season. The Hockey Hall of Fame goalie replaced Lane Lambert on January 20 and proceeded to lead New York on a 20-12-5 run. The Islanders’ 8-0-1 mark to close out the season was good enough to sneak them into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The big question mark for New York this season: the health of goalie Ilya Sorokin, who had back surgery this summer. Sorokin struggled mightily for long stretches last season, easily the most disappointing run of the 29-year-old’s career. The Islanders are hoping he gets back to full health and enjoys a bounce-back season.

For what it’s worth, New York allowed just 2.89 goals per game after Roy was hired — and 1.89 during the Islanders’ final nine-game postseason push — a remarkable drop from 3.36 before Roy took the reigns. The Islanders are hoping Roy’s impact on team culture — as well as fresh offensive acquisitions like Anthony Duclair and Maxim Tsyplakov — will help this team take another step forward in 2024-25.
