David Morrell says the ‘”Mexican Monster’ David Benavidez shouldn’t be “scared” and coming up with pre-fight excuses before their February 1st fight at light heavyweight. Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) has talked about his worries over Morrell’s VADA testing.
Desperate Measures
Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) sees WBC interim 175-lb champion Benavidez cooking up a PED excuse to give his fans to explain ‘what went wrong’ after he loses the fight. If he tells fans that he thinks Morrell, 26, was dirty, they’ll be sympathetic and won’t abandon him in droves.
Without an excuse to explain away the defeat, the fans will jump overboard the sinking Benavidez ship, like rats leaving a floundering vessel on the high seas. It could be impossible for him to bring them back unless he comes up with an excuse they’ll believe.
Many were willing to give Benavidez a pass for his last fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk when he said he was fighting with injuries. No x-rays were shown to verify the injuries, but fans still believed him because this was the first time.
Hopefully, Benavidez will show class if he loses rather than talking about his suspicions with no backing information to prove them.
The Cuban Morrell says Benanavidez has been fighting guys that weren’t at his level his entire career, but now that he’s facing someone at his level, he’s scared and talking PEDs to cushion the blow if he’s beaten.
Benavidez’s Insecurity
“He shouldn’t be scared. All his life, he’s been fighting fighters that aren’t at his level. This is what happens when they’re scared. They start to use excuses from everywhere,” said David Morrell to Sean Zittel, responding to the talk about VADA testing ahead of their fight on February 1st.
This is the first time in Benavidez’s 12-year pro career that he’s fighting someone in a 50-50 fight, and it’s surprising how he’s stooped to this level to stir up PED talk. Is it mind games for Benavidez to gain a much-needed edge against the younger, faster, stronger, and more talented Morrell?
You can perfectly understand why Benavidez would be worried about this fight. If he loses, his dreams of a mega-million fight against the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol 2 rematch will be lost, and he’ll never get a chance to fight Canelo Alvarez, either. He would be just one of the contenders at 175, battling in the salt mines, not making the big money.
