‘I’m a little bit emotional’ – Harry Kane’s voice breaks as he hands out England cap in emotional dressing room scenes

HARRY KANE couldn’t stop himself from choking up when he gave out an England cap to the nation’s latest debutant.

Captain Kane, 32, was emotional as he passed Djed Spence his first ever Three Lions cap following his cameo during England’s 5-0 thrashing of Serbia on Tuesday night.

Spence, 25, made his senior bow for the national side as a second-half substitute during the World Cup qualification rout.

The Tottenham star, who played alongside Kane briefly at Spurs before the striker left for Bayern Munich, made history with his 21-minute appearance.

Spence became the first Muslim to ever represent the England men’s national team.

In the changing room after the game, Kane made a brief speech as he presented Spence with his debut cap.

Visibly emotional, Kane said: “We have a new debut today. I asked to do this, because I saw this player three, four years ago at Tottenham and he had to go through a lot.

“He had to keep his head up. He had to work hard. Now he’s an England player so he fully deserves this.

“I’m a little bit emotional because I know how much it takes to get here and I saw what it was like, and it was tough for you.

“Credit to you, your family, everyone involved – you deserve this one.”

The pair shared an embrace as Kane handed over the cap, while the rest of the players applauded Spence following his achievement.

Spence has followed a hard path to get to the England squad, having ground out lower league moves and been sent on loan a number of times.

How Djed Spence Went from Trouble to England Call-Up

The left-back landed his big move to Spurs from Middlesbrough in 2022, with the expectation that he would become a starter in North London.

However, the chopping and changing of managers at the club saw him struggle to nail down a regular spot and meant he was sent on loan to Stade Rennais, Leeds and Genoa over the years.

Now he is one of Tottenham’s most consistent performers and earned his call-up from Thomas Tuchel after starting every Premier League game under new Spurs boss Thomas Frank so far this term.

Speaking to the media after becoming England’s first Muslim player, Spence said: “I was surprised because I didn’t know I was the first, so it’s a blessing

“It’s good to make history and hopefully inspire young kids around the world that they can make it as well. They can do what I am doing.”

Adding: “Whatever religion you believe in, just believe in God.

“God is the greatest for me personally and he never lets you down. Days like today are special because of God, for me.

“I was a little bit emotional because the journey hasn’t been easy. But I am officially an England player now and I am over the moon.”
