Alex Ovechkin is inching closer to that illustrious top spot on the all-time NHL goals leaderboard.
It’s a spot that Wayne Gretzky has held since retiring from the sport in 1999. The Hall of Famer is considered the greatest player to grace the ice, so it’s quite the achievement to surpass him.
Ovechkin will have an opportunity to do so this season with 11 games remaining. The first of the bunch will be against the Minnesota Wild. Ovechkin sits at 889 career goals, just five shy of tying Gretzky’s record and six of beating it.
A player has scored six goals in one game just eight times. If Ovechkin were to do this, it would add another massive layer to the historical night.
