How much money does Mariah Carey make from Christmas songs?
Christmas has proven an increasingly fruitful period for Carey since the release of her chart-topping triumph, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” in 1994.
Carey reportedly received $60 million in royalties between the years of 1994 and 2017, according to The Economist.
Billboard broke down what Carey could expect to receive after a typical holiday season, estimating that Carey netted $1.36 million from 1.47 million song consumption units in 2021. That’s not to mention publishing revenues, which saw the track earn a cool $378,000.
Those figures are impressive, especially given the fact that Carey’s tune was released 30 years ago. And yet it’s only a portion of the total check Carey receives in a typical holiday season.
“All I Want For Christmas Is You” is internationally recognized, with 49% of the song’s download sales and nearly 70% of its on-demand streaming coming outside the United States. In 2021, Carey’s ditty garnered 94,000 downloads and 823 million streams. That comes out to $4.5 million via Carey’s master recording version and another $1.66 million in global revenue and publishing royalties, per Billboard — a total of $6.16 million.
Now, there’s a bit of murkiness over just how much of that $6.16 million Carey will walk home with. We’re not privy to the terms of Carey’s master recording revenue split with Sony — Columbia Records’ parent company. Billboard estimated that Carey received $1.55 million in revenue on account of her masters. That’s just an estimate, however.
Carey also isn’t the sole songwriter on the track. Also credited is Walter Afanasieff, better known as Baby Love, a two-time Grammy winner who frequently collaborated with Carey throughout her 1990s pomp. We don’t know how the pairing divided up their contributions, meaning we can’t be sure just how publishing would split up the check between them.
Nevertheless, it’s safe to say Carey is taking home millions every year on account of her holiday staple.
