How long is Zach Hyman out? Upper-body recovery timeline, return date, latest updates on Oilers star

The Oilers are one win away from returning to the Stanley Cup Finals, but they’ll be without one of their best players for the rest of the playoffs.

Edmonton head coach Kris Knoblauch said winger Zach Hyman will have surgery for an upper-body injury and is likely out for the season, according to Elliotte Friedman.

Hyman sustained the injury in the first period of Game 3 on Tuesday when he took a shot from Dallas winger Mason Marchment. The Edmonton player went to the locker room a few minutes later and did not return.

Losing Hyman is a tough blow for the Oilers. Heading into last night, he was leading the playoffs in hits and had netted five goals and six assists.

Hyman took a glancing hit from Stars winger Mason Marchment as he was pushing forward out of the defensive zone. He dropped his stick and was clearly his right arm before heading to the bench and down the tunnel to Edmonton’s locker room with the team’s medical staff.

Edmonton was able to win the game 4-1 to take a commanding, two-game lead in the Western Conference Finals, but one of Hyman’s teammates knows the Oilers will be down a key contributor going forward.

“It’s a big loss,” said Edmonton forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. “He’s a big part of our team, on and off the ice, the way he does things. You’ve seen his physicality.

Zach Hyman injury update

The extent of Hyman’s injury is initially unclear, but it appears severe enough to keep him out for the rest of the postseason. He will have surgery on Wednesday, but Edmonton has not said anything about his recovery timeline.

Hyman has tallied 27 goals and 17 assists for 44 points in 73 games this season. He was a key piece in Edmonton’s run to the Stanley Cup finals last season, where they ultimately fell to the Panthers in seven games, scoring 16 goals in the playoffs.
