Hearn Puts Jaron Ennis-Josh Kelly Fight At 80%

Hearn Puts Jaron Ennis-Josh Kelly Fight At 80%

Eddie Hearn believes there is an “80%” chance that Jaron “Boots” Ennis and Josh Kelly will meet in a three-belt junior middleweight unification fight before the end of 2026. November or December remain under consideration, although Hearn ruled out December 12.

“I think it’s 80% likely Josh Kelly and Boots will happen in November or December of this year. No [it’s not being planned for Dec. 12],” Hearn said in footage shared by Everything Boxing on X.

Putting a percentage on the fight suggests negotiations have advanced beyond the exploratory stage. Hearn has discussed this pairing since July, but Kelly’s successful IBF title defense against Caoimhin Agyarko removed the final competitive obstacle.

Matchroom also controls both sides, sparing Hearn the promotional conflict that often delays major unifications. Final details still need to be settled, but there is no rival promoter protecting a separate television agreement.

The recovery timetable may determine how quickly the fight can be completed. Kelly suffered a nose injury against Agyarko in late July and later underwent minor surgery. A November date would leave limited time for the injury to heal before Kelly begins heavy sparring and prepares to absorb Ennis’ power.

The IBF champion has another reason to accept the biggest offer available. Kelly narrowly defeated Murtazaliev and then endured a difficult defense against Agyarko. Remaining in the IBF rotation would expose him to contenders such as Brandon Adams, Israil Madrimov, Nikita Tszyu, and a possible Murtazaliev rematch without offering the same purse or recognition.

Beyond the third belt, Kelly’s counterpunching and movement would test the defensive openings Ennis showed during his stoppage victory over Xander Zayas. Boots recovered after Zayas hurt him, eventually breaking the young champion down. Kelly is more comfortable slowing the action and forcing an aggressive opponent to lead.

Ennis remains the favorite due to his faster combinations, finishing power, and inside attack. Kelly must control the distance for 12 rounds without repeating the lapses that made his last two fights dangerously close.

Adding Kelly’s IBF belt to his WBA and WBO titles would leave only WBC champion Sebastian Fundora between Ennis and undisputed status. Hearn’s 80% estimate is encouraging, but a missing date and venue prevent the matchup from being treated as complete.
