Analyst Sergio Mora defended promoter Oscar De La Hoya in response to struggling fighter Ryan Garcia’s social media attacks on him this week. Earlier this week, De La Hoya had told Ryan during an interview on the AH Show that he needed to “wake up” and “grow up.”
Garcia responded by posting, “F** Golden Boy.”
De La Hoya’s Tough Love
The former six-division world champion De La Hoya’s comments were meant to get Garcia to take his career seriously, as he’s going downhill. As Mora points out, Ryan’s record is 1-2-1 in his last four fights, and he hasn’t fought since his upset 12-round unanimous decision defeat against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero on May 2, 2025, in New York.
“Ryan Garcia lost to Rolly Romero in a fight he wasn’t supposed to lose. He’s 1-2-1 in his last four fights,” said analyst Sergio Mora to DAZN Boxing about Ryan Garcia not panning out. “He’s not a winner right now. He’s not even won a championship.
Living Room Workouts
Instead of Garcia in the gym, looking to get ready for another fight in 2025, he’s been posting training videos of himself working out in his living room. This has drawn comparisons between him and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who did the same thing when his career began to collapse in September 2012.
“Oscar De La Hoya, yeah, he has a lot of skeletons in his closet. Why do you [Ryan] need to keep bringing that up? You haven’t amounted to anything that man has amounted to in boxing. Until you pick up your first strap, let alone six or seven divisions that Oscar did, then you should stay quiet, work hard in the gym, and get back to where you belong. That’s the top spot.”
The Hard Reality
The problem is, Garcia doesn’t “belong at the top spot.” Other than his upset 12-round majority decision win over Devin Haney on April 20, 2024, he’s never shown that he belongs among the best. Now, with him reduced to becoming a living room-trained fighter, it doesn’t appear he’s going anywhere in the sport.
Garcia doesn’t possess the talent of 1992 Olympic gold medalist and former six-division world champion De La Hoya. He never will. The vast sums of money Kingry has made during his short career —$50 million —are like an anchor, stifling the hunger he needs to improve.
Ryan’s contract with Golden Boy Promotions is believed to be up in 2026. At this point, it may not matter much to De La Hoya that he’ll be losing Garcia. He’s turned into a YouTuber-type of fighter. He doesn’t appear capable of beating any of the top fighters at 147, and it’s the same situation at 140.
While Ryan is useful for bringing in fans due to his many social media followers, his performance against Rolly and loss to Gervonta Davis show that he lacks the talent to be a world champion.
“Ryan Garcia is a top fighter, but right now, he’s going in the wrong direction and not winning,” said Mora.
