Will Still’s side started the game well and took the lead in the 30th minute through Adam Armstrong.

However, the lead only lasted three minutes as Anis Mehmeti levelled the contest.

The Robins were then gifted the lead in the second half due to some bizarre goalkeeping from Alex McCarthy.

The veteran was static as a long-range effort deflected onto his post.

As the ball rebounded, it appeared to be heading for an easy collection for the goalkeeper.

But instead of claiming the ball it made its way through the panicked McCarthy and to Scott Twine.

The winger was able to bury the simple opportunity but fans were left baffled by McCarthy’s actions.

One posted: “Have you ever seen anything like it.”

A second commented: “He glitched.”

A third wrote: “Everyone’s like a statue, zero movement.”

A fourth said: “Southampton keeper doing the mannequin challenge like it’s 2020 again.”

Another added: “Absolute cinema.”

Twine bagged himself another before full time to complete the 3-1 victory for the hosts.

The poor result for Southampton has left them 17th in the Championship with just two wins in their opening 11 games.

Since winning the play-off final to gain promotion to the Premier League in May 2024 the club has won just FOUR league games.

The four wins have come among a run of 47 games and were against Sheffield United, Wrexham, Ipswich Town and Everton.

Manager Still has started to come under fire from the fans with chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning” ringing out from the crowd.

Speaking after the game, the former Ligue 1 coach admitted his side fell victim to repeated mistakes.

He said: “Again we have gifted our opponents points by failing to take numerous chances and paying for some defensive mistakes.

“Unfortunately, I can’t put the ball in the net for my players, much as I wish I could.

“What I can do is give them the right processes from which to work and I think our performances are showing they are working.

“I have been a football fan myself and I totally get that they pay their money and have the right to criticise.

“From the outside this will look like a poor Southampton performance, but if you analyse the game we did a lot right”
