Gabriel Gomez continued his domination of the 2025 Formula Winter Series as the US Racing driver extended his championship lead with a podium in all three races at Aragon last weekend.
The Brazilian now leads the standings by 67 points over Fionn McLaughlin with just one race weekend remaining where 75 are on offer in Barcelona.
Gomez started on pole for the opening, 30-minute contest on Saturday and pulled away cleanly with team-mate Kabir Anurag directly behind.
Yet there was chaos further back, as Hitech’s Leo Robinson, who started seventh, hit the rear of team-mate McLaughlin at Turn 1 causing damage to his front wing.
Collisions continued to occur on the opening lap as four corners later, Jenzer’s Bart Harrison clipped Maxim Rehm’s rear-left tyre just as the US Racing driver was overtaking him for third.
A clean overtake finally happened on the second lap though, as Anurag claimed the lead from Gomez at Turn 1 and quickly began to establish a lead despite initial attempts from the Brazilian to force his way back through.
Anurag eventually took victory over his team-mate by three-seconds with McLaughlin completing the podium.
Conditions were different for race two on Sunday, as overnight rain caused a greasy track surface. Gomez and Anurag were once again on the front row, yet Rehm got the best start from third taking the lead at Turn 1 with the Singaporean in second.
Rehm and Anurag then battled fiercely for the lead and the latter finally made a move stick on the second lap, yet their fighting allowed Gomez and McLaughlin to close in.
McLaughlin quickly disposed of Gomez and Rehm, the two US Racing drivers switching positions amid the battling, before plucking away at a 2.7s deficit to Anurag in the latter stages.
He finally took the lead at Turn 15 with 10 minutes remaining and despite a late safety car which went back into the pitlane with a lap left, the Irishman clinched his second victory of the season.
The Hitech driver was joined on the podium by Anurag and Gomez before a third race, which had rain fall just moments before the formation lap.
Various drivers towards the back switched tyres instead of heading to their grid slots, while front row starters Anurag and Thomas Bearman got off the line slowly.
Rehm and McLaughlin stormed by but the US Racing driver went wide at Turn 1 allowing the Irishman to claim the lead.
They swapped positions again six corners later, during which time the wet tyre proved to be the optimal compound.
Simon Schranz, who started 20th, moved to sixth on lap one with the wet rubber before taking the lead the following tour – although a spin at Turn 1 on lap three tumbled him back down to fifth.
Yet with the wet-tyre continuing to be the fastest rubber, he quickly moved up to second behind Harrison who was on the same compound.
Various drivers then switched to wets but as that happened, the circuit was beginning to dry and McLaughlin, who stayed on slick tyres, began to reduce his deficit from third.
McLaughlin eventually overtook Harrison for the lead at Turn 7 with six minutes remaining to eventually take his second win of the weekend.
Fellow slick-tyre runners Rehm and Gomez subsequently overtook Harrison and Schranz to join McLaughlin on the podium.
It leaves Gomez in prime position to clinch the title at the season’s final weekend in Barcelona on 6-9 March.
