One season after the Daniel Jones experiment came to an end, the New York Giants will have a brand new starting quarterback in 2025, which figures to be Russell Wilson, who inked a one-year deal with the team this offseason.

But it isn’t that cut and dry in New York. With Wilson in his mid-30s and coming off a campaign in which he saw a steep decline near the end of the regular season, the Giants should be looking for a young signal-caller in the 2025 NFL draft.

New York holds the No. 3 pick and could have a crack at Shedeur Sanders in that spot if the Cleveland Browns don’t snatch him first. Of course, this is all with the assumption that the Tennessee Titans take Cam Ward at No. 1.

Even if Sanders is on the board at No. 3, the Giants could be tempted to take either Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter instead, and that’s the scenario that played out in the most recent three-round mock draft from Logan Ulrich of NFL Trade Rumors.

In the mock, the Giants opt to take Carter with Sanders still on the board at No. 3 overall. However, the team then swings a trade with the Seattle Seahawks that gets Big Blue back in the first round at pick No. 18, where the team takes Sanders. The proposal to get the Giants back into the first round is as follows:

  • Seahawks receive: Pick Nos. 34, 65, and 2026 fourth-round selection
  • Giants receive: Pick No. 18 (Shedeur Sanders), 2025 seventh-round pick

“It truly might be a coin flip, but my guess is the Giants will be a little more motivated to pull this deal off,” Ulrich wrote. “The trade would look similar for either team since they pick 33rd and 34th. The cost would be a second this year, a third this year and a future fourth-round pick, with the Seahawks perhaps kicking back a late-rounder to grease the wheels.”

According to the NFL Trade Value Chart, this would be a fair swap. The value of the picks the Seahawks give up is 901, while the total value of the three picks New York surrenders is right around 900 or more, depending on where the Giants’ 2026 fourth-rounder lands.

This would be an enormous win for the Giants, as not only would they land a blue-chip prospect in Carter, who is as close to a can’t-miss player as you can get in this draft, the team also lands a possible franchise quarterback in Sanders.

And, with Wilson set to be the starter, the Giants can take their time with Sanders initially and let him develop. From there, New York can replace Wilson with Sanders if things go south, or they can wait to insert him until 2026 if the quarterback has some success.

All that said, Sanders falling all the way to No. 18 has become less likely than it was just a few days ago.

Is it possible? Sure, but now that the New Orleans Saints have an even more dire need for a young quarterback in the wake of the Derek Carr injury, we don’t see them passing on Sanders at No. 9.

Knowing that, the Giants may have to choose between landing a generational talent like Carter, or a possible franchise quarterback in Sanders. If New York really believes in the Colorado product, the team shouldn’t hesitate to take him.
