Gervonta ‘Tank Davis has to ask himself if he wants to run it back with Lamont Roach after the problems he had in their 12-round majority draw on March 1st in Brooklyn, New York. The NYSAC chose not to overturn the results of the fight, keeping it a draw, despite the mess the referee made in the ninth round.
That still doesn’t change the fact that the boxing world overwhelmingly saw Tank Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) losing that fight. There’s a mental asterisk next to Gervonta’s unbeaten record in the minds of fans that will remain. Simply put, he got beat by Roach. Tank took a knee in the ninth round and should have lost that point. Everyone saw it.
Why Rematch?
- High PPV numbers: Fans will be very interested in a rematch now after the controversy from their last fight.
- Quiet the doubters: Tank needs a win to show his critics that his previous poor performance was just a fluke. He also needs to do it for himself because a fight like that will eat away at his self-confidence and torment him for the remainder of his career.
- Marketability hurt: Moving on from this fight without proving himself will hurt Gervonta’s popularity, and he could make less money.
It’s crucial that Tank Davis return to the ring this year rather than wait until 2026 for the rematch with Roach. He’s got to strike while the iron is still hot and the fans are interested in the fight. If Gervonta waits until next year, fans will have forgotten, and there won’t be as many PPV buys generated. Tank only fought once in 2024, but he’s got to fight at least twice this year.
“I’m not surprised about the decision by the NYSAC. A little disappointed, yeah, especially when they ACKNOWLEDGED the fact that Steve made the wrong calls in the 9th round. But I wasn’t banking on the overturn. Everyone knows I won the fight and I’m satisfied with that. Part 2 otw [on the way],” said Lamont Roach on X, reacting to the New York State Athletic Commission deciding not to overturn the results of their fight on March 1st.
