Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis says “nobody on TV” can match his skills and believes he’s got more ability than even Floyd Mayweather. You can’t deny his talent. The Baltimore native Tank Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) is the ‘Face of Boxing’ and is easily the most exciting fighter in the sport.

Today’s Fighter Types:

  • Boxer-punchers: Gervonta Davis
  • Defensive artists: Shakur Stevenson
  • Weight bullies: Keyshawn Davis

Tank is right about being the top skill for skill on TV because no one has the perfect balance of ability and power that he possesses. In this era, fighters with skills have zero power and don’t connect with fans. An example of that is Shakur Stevenson. Devin Haney is another example—no power and always holding.

He can’t crack an egg and is beyond words boring. Then, on the flip side, you’ve got the brawlers, who lead with their faces and soak up punishment. The third category is the weight bullies, who choose to fight two or three divisions below their size. We all know who they are.

“Skill for skill, none of these guys can match me, nobody. I feel like my skills are way better than Floyd [Mayweather] if I’m on my game,” said Gervonta Davis to mr_jayhill on his Instagram page.

“Skillwise, nobody on TV that’s fighting right now has more skills than me. I’m talking about top to bottom list of fighters that are fighting on TV.”

It’s not a surprise that Gervonta is must-see TV in this era with boxing fans because they want to be entertained for their money, and he provides that with his knockout wins. To compete in this modern era, fighters need to have a selling point that makes them worth watching.

Davis provides entertainment, and that’s the sole reason he’s one of the highest-paid fighters in the sport. Fans don’t want to watch a tapping contest or a weight bully taking advantage of the sport’s loose rules.

The competition from MMA and other sports is too fierce for boring fighters to become stars. It’s not enough for a dull fighter to adopt a villainous personality and Tweet 24/7. You must entertain inside the ring. That’s why Shakur Stevenson will never be a star and doesn’t rate to be in the presence of the King, Tank Davis. If Shakur wants the honor of meeting with royalty, he must slay his friend, Keyshawn, and beat the #1 guy, Andy Cruz. Is that asking too much?

What makes Gervonta a better fighter than Floyd Mayweather Jr. is that he’s exciting to watch, and the fans always get their money’s worth in his fights. You couldn’t say the same with Floyd. He fought in a safety-first manner that was hard to watch, and the temptation was always to turn the channel. His style has been copied by Shakur and Terence Crawford. They both use the same style, so neither ever became stars.
