WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis has reportedly been arrested today for battery and domestic violence for allegedly assaulting his former girlfriend last month on June 15th. Tank Davis was jailed in Miami at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Tank’s rematch with Lamont Roach for August 16th is now in doubt.
Roach Rematch Jeopardized by Arrest
It’s still too early to tell how Gervonta’s arrest will affect his rematch with Lamont Roach. Some fans see this as a prelude to Tank Davis weaseling out of his risky rematch with Roach to avoid a loss in a second fight.
If Davis were to lose to Roach, he would wreck his chances of getting the Shakur Stevenson clash that Turki Alalshikh wants. That fight will likely pay Tank Davis a career-high purse of mega-millions and put him in the upper crust of the mega-rich.
Davis’s Arrest: Mega-Fight Implications
There is so much money Gervonta will get for fighting Shakur that it’s hard to fathom the untold wealth he’ll receive for what is essentially an easy fight for him against the Jerry-esque runner. All that disappears if Tank goes ahead with the rematch with Roach and gets schooled for a second time.
The way that Lamont outboxed Davis in that fight, one can tell that he would do it again just as easily because he’s on another level than Davis skill-wise. But if Tank can use his arrest today to squirm out of the rematch, his problems are solved. He can just wait on the outcome of Saturday’s Stevenson-Zepeda fight, and face Shakur if he comes out the winner. Stevenson is the favorite in that fight.
The two are supposed to be fighting next month on August 16th to clear up the controversy surrounding their previous fight on March 1st, which ended in a controversial 12-round draw.
Fans are critical of how the referee handled the fight. Tank Davis took a knee in a delayed reaction after being hit with a jab by Roach in the ninth round. Davis then got up and walked to his corner, as if he were quitting, and had his eyes wiped off by his trainer.
All this occurred without Tank asking for a time-out. The referee blew the knockdown call by not counting it, and then failed to stop the fight when Tank walked away without a word, which looked like a classic ‘No mas’ move of him quitting.
