Gary Antuanne Russell Declares Devin Haney “Washed Up” and “Broke” After His Timid Showing Against Jose Ramirez

Gary Antuanne Rusell says Devin Haney is “washed up” after watching his performance against Jose Ramirez on the May 2nd card at Times Square in New York City. The WBA light welterweight champion, Gary Antuanne, says Haney (32-0, 15 KOs) is pure “trash,” and mentally “broke” from the beating he took against Ryan Garcia last year in April.

Russell doesn’t say if he thinks Haney can regroup and rebuild to become the fighter he once was. However, with the way he was talking, it sounds like he doesn’t believe Haney can come back from this loss.

Russell Calls Haney “Washed Up”

“Trash. Devin Haney is broke now. Ryan Garcia done broke that boy. Ryan Garcia put him down, hurt him, and did all this, and put a beating on him. Now, he doesn’t even fight the same,” said Gary Antuanne Russell to MillCity Boxing, reacting to Devin Haney’s last performance against Jose Ramirez.

Haney looked 100% scared against Ramirez from the moment the fight started until it ended. That wasn’t just Haney playing it safe to ensure he gets to the Ryan Garcia rematch in one piece. He just looked scared. Tim Bradley believes Haney is showing signs of PTSD, a mental health problem that war vets experience after undergoing traumatic events.

A soldier still on the frontlines who has PTSD is ineffective due to their judgment. Haney didn’t perform the way he used to, and looked terrified the entire fight against what many fans saw as a washed-up fighter, in Ramirez.

“He fought this Spanish guy [Ramirez], and he only threw 74 punches the whole fight, if that [note: Haney landed 70 of 224 shots]. “Any hard shots he threw it was probably a jab to the body. He only threw a couple of hooks, and his hooks wasn’t hard. Were they clean? Okay, I give you that, but they wasn’t even no effective punches.”

Devin looked like he didn’t trust his ability to take one of Ramirez’s shots. He was treating him like he was a one-punch knockout artist rather than a guy with decent power. Some fans believe Haney was having a flashback inside the ring, remembering the horror of being on the war front against Ryan Garcia. If Devin’s mind was flashing back to the Garcia fight, it’s no wonder why he wasn’t throwing shots.

Russell Questions Haney’s Future

“It wasn’t like no effective shots that he fully committed to. It was scared shots,” said Gary Antuanne about Haney. “You could see in him that his heart isn’t all the way there. Hopefully, it’ll hold him over until his next fight because I don’t know who the hell he’s got for his next fight. I just know he is personally trash. He’s washed up. I never thought he was good anyway.

“I just thought he was a good listener, and he tried to imitate Floyd [Mayweather] to the best of his ability, but trash,” said Russell.

If Haney keeps fighting the way he did against Ramirez in other fights, then it’s safe to say that he’s washed up. Right now, we can only say Devin didn’t look good against Ramirez.
