The New York Jets made a bold move this offseason to move away from veteran Aaron Rodgers and sign unproven quarterback Justin Fields to a long-term extension. Fields agreed to a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets and is expected to be their starting quarterback. Giving Fields that lucrative contract was surprising because he spent most of last season as a backup quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, the Jets are betting on the skill set of Fields and hoping he can show off the ability that made him a first-round pick back in 2021.
One interesting storyline to follow with Fields joining the Jets is him teaming up with wide receiver Garrett Wilson again. Those two played together during their time at Ohio State, and Wilson is especially excited to team up with Fields again. Wilson said, “I didn’t think we’d get this opportunity again on this level.”

Wilson has the talent to be one of the best receivers in football, but he has not had the benefit of the best quarterback play over the years. Last season, he set career highs in receptions, yards, and touchdowns while playing with Rodgers. Also, he has his third consecutive 1,000-yard season. It will be interesting to see if Fields helps or hurts his ability to reach 1,000 yards once again. Fields has struggled as a passer during his career, which is why he has spent time as a backup.
The Jets and their new coaching staff are pushing all their chips in on Fields. He will be their best option at quarterback, and all you can hope is that he will improve as a passer compared to what we have seen in the past. Most people are not expecting the Jets to be competitive in 2025. However, if they find their way into playoff contention, it will likely bode well for the former Ohio State duo.
