With five games to go, the Brewers still need two wins to secure their first 100-win season in franchise history. They also have to stay ahead of the surging Dodgers for the top seed in the National League and best record in baseball. With Logan Henderson on the mound, they’ll try to get their 99th win in game two against the Phillies.
This will likely be Henderson’s final regular-season start before the postseason. He hit a bump last time out against the Pirates, allowing three runs in five innings of work. He struck out eight and walked one while allowing six hits. Henderson has not faced the Phillies before, and only one member of their team (Luis Arraez, 0-for-3) has an at-bat against him. Overall this season, Henderson has a 2.51 ERA and 3.30 FIP with 107 strikeouts.
For the Phillies, Aaron Nola makes the start. Nola is a 12-year veteran who the Brewers have seen plenty of times. Their last game against him came on June 13, where they scored three runs off him in 4 2/3 innings. Nola has been successful over his career against the Brewers, posting a 3.22 ERA in 16 previous starts over 95 innings. This season, he has a 4.49 ERA and 4.79 FIP with 169 strikeouts over 31 starts (168 1/3 innings).
Before the game, the Brewers announced a roster move. After yesterday’s solid performance against the Phillies, Colton Gordon was optioned back down to Triple-A Nashville. In a corresponding move, the contract of Lyon Richardson was selected from Nashville. No 40-man roster move was needed since the Brewers had two open spots.
The Brewers will use most of the same lineup as yesterday. The top five — Garrett Mitchell, Jackson Chourio, Brice Turang, William Contreras, and Jake Bauers — remain the same. Joey Ortiz get the start at shortstop over Cooper Pratt, with Christian Yelich moving down to seventh. Sal Frelick starts over Luis Lara in right field, and David Hamilton rounds out the lineup at third base.
On the scoreboard, the main game to watch tonight is the Padres-Dodgers game at 9:10 p.m. The Brewers are one game ahead of the Dodgers and hold the tiebreaker. The magic number for the Brewers to clinch the top seed in the National League and the best overall record is four. Meanwhile, the Phillies can clinch a playoff spot with a win tonight and a loss by either the Padres or Diamondbacks.
