Gabe Rosado Mocks Edgar Berlanga’s Star Delusion

Gabe Rosado Mocks Edgar Berlanga’s Star Delusion

Veteran Gabe Rosado says Edgar Berlanga is “delusional,” believing he’s a big draw since his fight against superstar Canelo Alvarez last September. Rosado says Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) thinks the PPV success of his fight against Canelo was due to his popularity rather than the Mexican star’s. He sees Edgar as out of touch with reality, believing he’s a big draw and a star.

Rosado points out that Berlanga’s last fight against inactive Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida, failed to sell out last March. The venue has a seating capacity of 5,000 seats, yet the event still wasn’t a sellout.

Gabe sounds bitter still that Berlanga chose not to fight him. The two were reportedly in negotiations for a fight in February or March in Puerto Rico. However, it never happened, and Rosado still seems salty about it.

Turki’s Pick: Berlanga Headliner

Despite Rosado’s criticism, Turki Alalshikh has chosen Berlanga to headline his July 12th card against Hamzah Sheeraz in a PPV event at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York. Turki likes Berlanga enough to put him in the main event rather than choosing the Shakur Stevenson vs. William Zepeda fight as the headliner.

“If you thought you were the star you thought you were, why wasn’t it sold out? Why was it in a little ballroom, and it still wasn’t sold out?” said Gabriel Rosado to DAZN Boxing, discussing Edgar Berlanga’s last fight against 35-year-old Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz on March 15th in Orlando, Florida.

If Berlanga wins his fight against Sheeraz and looks good like he did with his first-round knockout of Gonzalez-Ortiz, Turki will surely use him for a bigger contest against Caleb Plant or Jermall Charlo. As long as Edgar keeps winning and looking good, he’s likely to keep fighting in Turki’s events.

“As a Matchroom fighter, Eddie Hearn kept his word, kept his promise to get you the Canelo fight,” said Rosado. “You got that bag, and then you leave him because you don’t want to resign. How don’t you want to resign with someone who kept their word and got you that amount of money that you would have never made?”

Why Berlanga Left Matchroom

It did look bad that Berlanga left Hearn rather than re-up with his Matchroom company after his contract expired last March. Hearn had gotten him the Canelo fight. However, Berlanga partly justified leaving Matchroom because Hearn failed to invest money in getting him a title shot against the then-IBF super middleweight champion William Scull for March.

Edgar felt that Hearn should have done that. If he had, he says he would have destroyed Scull, and would be fighting Canelo in a rematch for the undisputed 168-lb championship.

“Then you think you’re going to fight [Caleb] Plant and [Jermall] Charlo. What do you think, PBC is going to pay you that [money]? Come on, bro. Do you know the business of boxing? Canelo was your fight. You’re delusional because you thought you did those numbers. Canelo did those numbers,” said Rosado.

Berlanga’s Future With Turki

As long as Turki uses Berlanga for his events, it doesn’t matter what PBC will do. He will ensure that he’s paid well for the fights against Plant or Charlo if those are the ones he’s interested in making. It’s difficult to predict what fights Turki would be interested in making for Berlanga if he’s victorious in his battle against Sheeraz.
