Sebastian Fundora promised to burn down Las Vegas. Ermal Hadribeaj promised a hard fight. Both sounded ready during Thursday’s virtual press conference, but the first media push for their October 17 title fight gave casual fans little reason to stop scrolling. That is a problem for a card whose main event already needs an introduction.
Fundora said he intends to extend his three-fight knockout streak. Hadribeaj spoke about the work that earned him a shot at the WBC super welterweight title and what becoming Albania’s first world champion would mean to him. Those stakes are real. Neither man, though, gave the press conference a line that made the matchup feel urgent.
“We’re only focused on this fight. We know that we can’t overlook anyone. We focus on the work and take it one fight at a time,” Fundora said during Thursday’s virtual press conference.
That is sensible preparation from a champion. It is a tough sales pitch. Hadribeaj was equally respectful, calling Fundora “a great guy” and recalling that they met three years ago. His most interesting answer came when he rejected the obvious advice to attack Fundora’s body. He said others have tried it and suggested he has worked on specific answers, but kept those details to himself.
The rest of the card has the same problem. Jermall Charlo was once a name that drew attention on its own. Long stretches out of the ring have cost him that pull, and a bout with Koen Mazoudier offers little to restore it before the opening bell. Their fight had been scheduled for July in Australia before Charlo’s trip fell through; moving it to Las Vegas has given the card a former champion, but not a matchup many fans were asking to see.
Brandon Figueroa’s title defense is harder to understand. He stopped Nick Ball in the final round to win the WBA featherweight belt, a result that should have set up another fight with immediate appeal. Instead, he faces 35-year-old Tomoki Kameda, who lost to IBF champion Angelo Leo in 2025. Kameda is ranked by the WBA, so this is a legitimate title defense. Still, Leo is the opponent who would give fans a clear answer about where Figueroa stands among the featherweight champions.
Fundora and Hadribeaj may produce an excellent fight. Figueroa usually makes opponents work, and Charlo’s return will interest those who have followed him for years. But Thursday was a chance to make people care before October 17. The fighters gave the promoter very little to work with, while the matchmaking left the card’s biggest questions unanswered.
