Promoter Frank Warren says Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk 3 would be a “great, big fight” if it were to happen. Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) recently mentioned wanting a third fight against Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) after losing his last two bouts against him. However, fans on social media don’t want to see Fury, 36, being given a third straight fight against Usyk after going 0-2.
Don’t Reward Defeat
Fury looked like a living fossil in the rematch last December. It was hard to believe he was in his mid-30s, because he looked closer to 50 and performed poorly.
Based on merits, Fury hasn’t done anything to deserve another title shot against Usyk. Challengers to earn title shots, not be given repeated shots after losing. It makes the sport look like a popularity contest rather than a true one if an old, feeble Fury is given three straight cracks at Usyk.
It doesn’t matter if the first two fights were close. He still lost and should have to beat a top contender, like Agit Kabayel or his friend, Joseph Parker, to earn a third encounter with Usyk. If Saudis want to give Fury a bunch of money, they should insist that he focus on Anthony Joshua or one of the top contenders if his two defeats against Usyk still haunt him.
The way Fury performed in his rematch with Usyk, he’d have no chance of winning in the trilogy match. He’s too slow now and has lost the mobility that he once had a decade ago when he picked up his best career win, beating 39-year-old Wladimir Klitschko.
“But Tyson to get the fight [with Oleksandr Usyk], get revenge [after] what he feels, and I feel certainly in one of the fights, was a fight that he won, that’s again a great, big fight,” Frank Warren said to Sky Sports Boxing about Tyson Fury potentially being lured out of retirement for the desire to get revenge against Oleksandr Usyk.
The two fights I watched, Fury came close to winning NONE of them. He should have been knocked out in the first fight. That was the one where the referee saved him with a standing eight count in the ninth, just when he was about to be knocked out by Usyk. In the second fight, it was a one-sided domination by Usyk against a fossilised-looking Fury.
Mockery of the Sport
Fury has looked dreadful in three straight fights against Usyk x 2 and Francis Ngannou. Those performances showed that he’s got nothing left of his skills, which were never great to begin with. He shouldn’t be allowed to fight Usyk a third time unless it’s an exhibition or if the titles are not available. In other sports like the NFL, you don’t get repeated chances to play in the Super Bowl if you lose. A team can’t sit out an entire season and wait to play in the Super Bowl year after year. That’s what Fury is doing, and it makes a mockery of the sport.
“For the Brits, Tyson and AJ are the fight that hasn’t happened. Maybe it will, who knows? So that’s got a massive appeal about it,” said Warren about the ‘Battle of Britain’ clash between Fury and Anthony Joshua being an option for him if he comes out of retirement.
