The commotion seemed to be sparked when Pompey boss Mousinho began protesting a decision to the fourth official.

Lampard then got involved and appeared to tell Mousinho to go back to his technical area.

They started arguing and had to be separated by fourth official Stephen Martin.

Mousinho then began gesticulating at his opposite number as tempers continued to flare.

Calm was then restored until the Coventry bench broke out in celebration after Brandon Thomas-Asante opened the scoring in the 30th minute.

The same man doubled Coventry’s lead just after the hour mark.

It is not the first confrontation Mousinho has had with another manager this season having clashed with Southampton boss Will Still.

At the end of the South Coast derby last month the pair shared a bizarre handshake.

Mousinho appeared to hold onto Still’s hand for longer than necessary.

They exchanged a quizzical look with Still unleashing an outburst, appearing to question Mousinho’s actions.

The scene was reminiscent of the infamous frosty handshake between Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte.

Makenzie Kirk scored a 96th-minute consolation for Portsmouth but it was not enough as Coventry stayed top of the Championship.
