Former UFL and new Jets kicker might have best nickname in the NFL

Former UFL and new Jets kicker might have best nickname in the NFL

Good nicknames in the NFL are always fun, especially when they’re for players at unheralded positions, like kicker, for example.

The New York Jets made the decision to bring in more competition at the position recently, and did so by signing UFL kicker Harrison Mevis.

Mevis brings a 95% field goal success rate from the UFL with him to the NFL and will now look to earn the Jets’ starting job and become the next Jake Bates, who managed to have tons of success with the Detroit Lions after a UFL stint.

Perhaps the best part about Mevis is his nickname. Thanks to his stocky build, the new Jets kicker has picked up the moniker “The Thiccer Kicker.”

“Thiccer” is, of course, the slang spelling for “thicker” and, according to Merriam-Webster, “thicc” means “attractively full-figured; thickset” and is used as a compliment for “curvy women or brawny men.”

At 5-foot-11 and 243 pounds, Mevis definitely qualifies.

The fact that we’re actually at a point that “thicc” is recognized in any form or fashion by a dictionary is incredible, but I digress.

In the wake of bringing in Mevis, the Jets also parted ways with veteran Anders Carlson, leaving Mevis to compete for the kicker job with rookie Caden Davis.

This follows the trend of the Jets trying to get younger with their specialists. Kicker Greg Zuerlein and punter Thomas Morstead were both cut earlier this offseason.

That leaves the Jets with candidates for both the kicker and punter jobs who have no regular season experience in the NFL.

We can only hope Mevis wins the starting job so we can use “The Thiccer Kicker” throughout the 2025 campaign and beyond.
