Former Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert has landed himself a new gig, but it isn’t in the NFL. Instead, Colbert is going to work for a college program.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Colbert has been hired as a consultant for the Colorado State Rams. Colbert’s primary job will be to help the program set up “systems for building a football front office.”

“Sources: Colorado State is bringing on former Pittsburgh Steelers GM Kevin Colbert as a consultant, part of the school’s push to stay at the forefront for the new era of college football,” Thamel reported. “Colbert will help coach Jay Norvell and the school’s player personnel department set up systems for building a football front office.”

Colbert will be a strong sounding board for Colorado State, as he brings a wealth of executive experience with him to the program.

Colbert got his start in the NFL as a college scout with the Miami Dolphins in 1985. He then served as a pro scouting director with the Detroit Lions for an entire decade before landing with the Steelers in 2000, where he first served as director of football operations for another decade.

Colbert was then promoted to general manager in 2010, a role he served in through the 2022 NFL Draft, and he had vice president added to his title in 2016. Among his many responsibilities, Colbert ran the draft during his time in Pittsburgh.

With Colbert in the mix, Pittsburgh won a pair of Super Bowl titles, although both came before he was promoted to general manager. The Steelers lost Super Bowl XLV in Colbert’s first year as general manager.

“The partnership is with Colbert and Altius Sports Partners, and it will include Altius chairman and veteran administrator Oliver Luck,” Thamel added. “Colorado State AD John Weber and assistant AD Scott Sidwell’s are aiming for an innovative approach for the next iteration of college athletics.

“Colbert worked with the Steelers from 2000-22 in prominent front office roles, played a big hand in a pair of Super Bowl wins and oversaw the team’s draft his entire tenure,” Thamel continued. “CSU officials view the sport becoming more like the NFL and this as a way to more effectively spend money.”

This will be Colbert’s first known job since leaving the Steelers in 2022.
